Detailed Itinerary

Machame route is a very scenic route approached from southwest. The route provides a fantastic scenery and terrific landscape. Machame route is among the most popular routes offering over 85% success rate. The Machame route is however tougher and thus it is referred as a whisky route. Machame route hike are comprised of steeper trails, for longer distances and while sleeping in tents as compared to Marangu route where we have mountain huts.

Day 1: After arriving at Kilimanjaro airport or Arusha, we’ll pick you and check into a hotel.  You will spend the night to allow you time to regenerate and meet with your guides for the next day as they give you a pre-climb details and gear check as well. Depending on time you can do a tour of the town with your guide. Overnight: Moshi or Arusha Town Hotel.

Day 2: Arusha – Machame Camp. You will start your day with a short drive to the gate. Thereafter, you will walk through the lush lower slopes of Mt. Kilimanjaro. You will slowly gain altitude while enjoying the diverse flora and fauna of the rain forest. You will have en route. On a clear day, you may get our first view look at the glaciated dome of Kibo. This is a 6-7 hours walk. Meals and Overnight: Machame Camp

Day 3: Machame – Shira Camp. After breakfast, we leave the glades of the rain forest and continue on an ascending path, crossing the little valley walking along a steep rocky ridge, covered with heather, until the ridge ends. The route now turns west onto a river gorge. Meals and overnight: Shira Campsite.

 Day 4: Shira Camp – Barranco. You will start your day by going via desert and rocky landscape around Lava Tower. From Lava Tower, the descent to Barranco camp takes about 2 hours and offers great opportunities to take some beautiful photographs of the Western Breach and Breach Wall. This is definitely the toughest day so far. It is normally around this point, where for the first time, some climbers will start experiencing symptoms of breathlessness, irritability and headaches. After lunch, you will proceed to Barranco. Meals and Overnight: Barranco Camping.

Day 5: Barranco – Barafu Camp. After breakfast, you will have a day of adventure and fun as you get challenged by the hike up Barranco wall.  It’s not a technical wall, but challenging nonetheless. Once on top of the “wall”, the climb becomes easier and extremely beautiful with fantastic views of the crags and crevasses of the jagged peaks of Kibo on your left. Lastly you will descend into the Karanga Valley camp for lunch and thereafter proceed to Barafu hut. Its an exhausting and freezing day. Meals and overnight: Barafu Camp

Day 6: Barafu Camp– Summit – Mweka. You will be woken in the middle of the night for the grueling hike up the summit.  The hike is demanding being done at night. You will need all your will power on this day. The hike takes you slowly over the rocky outcrops and through the scree until you reach to the top of the rim. The earlier you get to the summit, the more time you have to enjoy the sunrise on the top of the roof of Africa. The view of the summit is dramatic, magnificent and breathtaking.  After the summit, you will descend to Barafu for lunch then down to Mweka camp for last night on the mountain. Meals and overnight: Mweka Camp.

Day 07: Mweka – Moshi/Arusha. After breakfast, you will have a 3-4 hour walk down to the gate, where the tours vehicles meet you and take you back to the hotel Arusha or Moshi for Kilimanjaro certificate and celebration with lots of fun fare having conquered the mountain.
